Slow down, take a breath

Designed along biophilic principles, this show home kitchen/scullery connects with nature and radiates positive energy – inviting visitors to linger

Designed by Jessica Blair, Forager Studio

From the designer:

The interior of this show home was conceived as a sanctuary of warmth and simplicity, deeply rooted in biophilic design principles.

The owner’s brief called for an inviting, serene, and effortlessly functional space that would resonate with potential homeowners seeking inspiration.

Key to the vision was creating an environment that felt calming and connected to nature, while remaining highly practical for everyday living.

A major challenge was designing a kitchen-scullery layout that felt open and cohesive, yet could accommodate the functional needs of modern living.

To address this, the scullery was intentionally left open – becoming a natural extension of the kitchen rather than a concealed utility space.

By placing extensive storage below the bench line, appliances could be hidden from sight without disrupting the clean lines of the space.

This design choice also preserved natural light flow, allowing the full length of the rear kitchen bench to be bathed in daylight – enhancing the home’s warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Materiality played a crucial role in delivering the desired aesthetic.

Warm oak cabinetry and vertical slatting bring texture and grounding warmth, while soft white laminate overhead cabinetry lightens the palette and ensures visual balance.

A hand-laid herringbone tiled splashback adds a subtle, tactile feature that draws the eye without overpowering.

Integrated appliances keep the aesthetic seamless, while brushed nickel fixtures lend a refined, contemporary edge.

Thoughtful lighting choices, including understated pendant lights and a custom linear timber fixture, reinforce the biophillic theme while providing functional illumination.

Natural materials, layered textures, and curated styling elements throughout the dining and kitchen zones encourage relaxation and connection.

Ultimately, the space delivers on the owner’s goals: it’s not only visually inspiring, but emotionally uplifting – a home that radiates positive energy.

It invites visitors to slow down, take a breath, and imagine the possibilities of life within its walls.
